Rita's background is indeed a typical one - her parents and grandparents, originally from the Barga area emigrated to Scotland where like many other Italian emigrants, they opened their own catering business. During her years, she gradually immersed herself in the culture, customs and traditions of her parents and grandparents and in particular their culinary cultures. Rita studied the ancient secrets and techniques of traditional Tuscan cooking and kept alive certain recipes that lost popularity in the fast food era.

Rita has now been in Barga for almost 30 years running her Bed and Breakfast and apartments together with her children and has now opened her cooking school! Her partner Alex, who is a professional singer, has a winery very close to La Mezzaluna. The two work well together and hope you will give them the opportunity to let you experience the cooking, the wine and the music!

Barga

The medieval town of Barga is part of beautiful Tuscany in central Italy. Twinned with four towns in Scotland, the town is actually known as “The most Scottish town in Italy” – this is because of its surrounding hills which may make British tourists feel slightly closer to home than they really are, and the vast number of Scottish migrants arriving in the 20th century!

Barga Castle towers over the region and is sight to behold, while the Duomo (cathedral) dates back to the 11th century, making it a beautiful example of Roman architecture.

While winter sees rain and lows of 5°C, summers in Barga are warm and largely dry.
