Krakow

With Europe’s largest medieval market square, Krakow is steeped in history and the Polish culture is palatable as you walk the streets. One of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, the Old Town offers a unique experience with its hourly “heynal”, or trumpet call, which is produced from the top of Saint Mary’s Church tower. Furthermore, for everyday eating and socialising, the city has a huge array of cafes, classy restaurants and modern bars and nightclubs.

The main attraction in the city is the stunning Wawel royal castle dating from the 14th century. However, as well as this Krakow is a 90min drive away from Auschwitz and only 40mins from the Wieliczka Salt Mine.

While most of the inner city has been transformed into a pedestrian district because of the ease of navigating from one sight to another, trams and buses are cheap and quick alternatives should you wish to go further afield.

Krakow’s weather ranges from the freezing cold to scorching heat, depending on the time of your trip. However, despite the snow expected in harsh winters, this is far from off-putting to a huge number of visitors who flock to the city’s Christmas markets.
