Champagny en Vanoise (1250m) offers all the charm of a quiet Savoyard village nestled in the Tarentaise valley in the French Alps, with the added bonus of a vast ski area on its doorstep. The resort is one of 10 that make up the La Plagne ski area, with 225km of marked runs and around 100 lifts. Since 2003 La Plagne has been connected by the Vanoise Express cable car to nearby Les Arcs, creating the enormous Paradiski area, one of the biggest in the world offering a whopping 425km of linked runs. Even the most dedicated skier won't cover them all in a week!

The slopes of Champagny are south facing and enjoy lots of sunshine, while the glacier at 3,000m offers snow sure conditions throughout the winter. With 9 green runs, 67 blue, 33 red and 19 black, the area is ideal for beginners and intermediates; there aren't many truly challenging runs here for expert skiers, making it more suitable for families and those looking to improve their turns than thrillseekers.

As you would expect from such a large ski area, La Plagne offers lots of fun attractions, including a boardercross style 'funslope' (see video), the 7 cube snowpark and even an Olympic bobsleigh run. There are some extensive cross-country trails around the area, and husky dog sledding is also available.

The village offers all the necessary amenities, including some excellent food shops as well as a selection of bars, cafes and restaurants. There is a free shuttlebus service available all day to get to the slopes and town centre.

Après ski

In terms of nightlife Champagny is quite laid back, with some good restaurants for dining out (some of which deliver) and a handful of bars open until late if that is what you are looking for.
