Châtel (1,200m) is a traditional Haute-Savoie village that has retained a lot of its charm despite being part of one of the biggest ski areas in the world. Located on the Swiss border, close to Lake Geneva the village is part of the vast Portes du Soleil ski area, linking 12 resorts across the Franco-Swiss border (8 French, 4 Swiss) for a reported total of 650km of slopes from 950 to 2400m.

Though the area is quite low when compared to the other big French ski areas les trois vallees and Paradiski its peculiar microclimate ensures lots of snowfall, and the snowmaking facilities and grooming are first rate.

Châtel itself offers around 80km of runs; 6 black, 15 red, 16 blue, and 9 green, as well as a snow park and boarder cross slope. The ski pass included in this package includes a Châtel ski pass, you can pay a supplement for the entire Portes du Soleil area. From the town you can reach Super Châtel by lift, from where you can reach the Swiss resorts of Torgon and Morgins. Alternatively you can take a shuttle bus to Linga/Pre La Joux and from there ski to Avioratz.

Adrenaline junkies will love the 1,200m Fantasticable zip-wire – speeds can reach up to 100km per hour! At the bottom you can collect your equipment (which follows you down the wire in a transportation bag), clip on your skis and carry on skiing. It costs around € 30 per person.

Alternative activities include the 12km of cross-country skiing tracks or snowshoeing around 40km of marked trails. There is also an ice rink and wellness centre with swimming pool.

Apres Ski:

Châtel may not be the liveliest resort in terms of apres ski, but there is plenty going on, including a Monday night welcome party in the main square, two cinemas showing English language films and a bowling alley, as well as a handful of good pubs and some good restaurants. For those who want to carry on into the small hours there is a nightclub near the gondola station.
