Gosau (780m) is a charming Alpine resort, which along with Annaberg and Russbach make up the main ski area of the Dachstein West ski region covering a total of 142km of runs from 700m to 2100m. Don't be put off by the height, this area offers excellent snow coverage over most runs, and the scenery is just breathtaking (even for a ski resort).

The DW ski pass also includes a number of smaller resorts around the area; Freesports Arena Krippenstein/Obertraun, Feuerkogel in Ebensee, St. Martin am Tennengebirge, Lungötz inkl. Flutlicht-Skifahren, Karkogel in Abtenau and Bad Dürnberg, though on a short ski break you probably won't make the trip.

The predominately red slopes mean the area is a paradise for intermediate skiers, with lots of wide red slopes and some gentle wave runs. Beginners are nonetheless able to progress to some of the easier slopes on the mountain, while the practice slopes are lower down in the valley.

More advanced skiers will enjoy the fun slopes throughout the ski area, including mogul fields, slopes with wave runs and a timed run, while snowboarders and freestyle skiers will love the huge snowpark which offers jumps, kickers and rails for all levels.

Children are well catered for too, with kids clubs for younger children who are not ready to ski and some fun ski areas for those who are just starting out, this is a great place for them to learn.

The area also offers extensive cross country skiing and night skiing as well as a toboggan run. The town also offers an indoor swimming pool.

Après ski

There are some lively bars clustered around the lift stations, and on the slopes, which really get going at the weekend. Go-Gosau at the Hornspitz mountain station is one of the highlights.

For those not looking to party, a visit to the pretty nearby spa town of Bad Ischl (30 mins away) and its thermal spa is worthwhile.

3* Hotel Kirchenwirt

This cosy, friendly hotel is situated in a panoramic location 500m from the centre of the village of Gosau, next to the village church.

There is a ski bus stop 50m from the hotel to the nearest gondola station 1km away. During winter the skibus stops twice in the morning and once in the afternoon.

Hotel facilities include a bar, children's play room and free WiFi access and parking. Please note that there is no lift.

The carpeted rooms come with satellite TV, private bathroom with bath or shower and hairdryer.

The new wellness area offers a Finnish sauna, infrared cabin and relaxation area, and hotel guests enjoy a discount at the Gosau indoor pool.

A buffet breakfast and 3-course dinner are both served in the restaurant, which has received very positive reviews.
