Itinerary

Day 1
Arrival and overnight in Helsinki.

Day 2 (50-65 km)
Pick up your bikes in the morning around 8.30-9.00, then head off in the direction of the Central Park forest trails. Cycling north, you soon enter the Haltiala fields and some lovely countryside. Be sure to stop for coffee or lunch at Wanha Pehtoori cafe. The track continues along Kerava River. In the Lake Tuusulanjärvi region you will cycle along the famous lakeside road, many of Finland’s most prominent artists used to stay here in the early 1900’s. Check your battery level and top up if necessary. Overnight in Järvenpää region.

Day 3 (40-50 km)
Continue east along quiet country roads. Stop in Pornainen for lunch and check out the beautiful stone church. After a few kilometers along forest roads the Porvoonjoki river valley starts, one of the Finnish National Landscapes. The trail follows the river and eventually you reach Porvoo, where the characteristic old town is also listed as a National Landscape. Visit some of the quaint cafes and restaurants. Overnight in Porvoo region.

Day 4 (45 km)
Your morning starts with some relaxed cycling along the river and down to the Baltic Sea. Drive through country villages to Sipoo. Visit cafe Kaksi Verantaa for the delicious pastries, there are also some good lunch restaurants near the town centre. Head south, following the Sipoo river valley. If it’s a nice day, you may like to stop on Lake Pilvijärvi where there is a delightful little swimming beach. You can also rent kayaks near the river delta. Overnight in Sipoo region.

Day 5 (45 km)
In the morning cycle west along the coast. As you approach Helsinki, the trail will take you on cycle paths very near the water’s edge. Take your time and enjoy the views and/or stop for a coffee in the old Puotila mansion. In the afternoon you will reach Viikki, a protected bird habitat and arboretum, where you will find over 400 species of trees and shrubs and can climb one of the bird watching towers. This is a real oasis on the outskirts of central Helsinki. As you exit the protected area, stop for a moment by the Vanhakaupunki rapids, where Helsinki was founded in year 1550. There is a very good restaurant by the water. Tour ends, drop off your bikes and head to the airport, or if you have booked an extra night, to your hotel.

Finland is a country of vast open spaces, lush forests and crystal-clear lakes with a lower population (5.5 million) than that of London!

The capital Helsinki is a vibrant, fun city to visit thanks to its innovative architecture, cultural scene and lively nightlife, especially in the summer. Thanks to its relatively small size, it is easily explored on foot. It is a likeable, laid-back place so if you want to stay for an extra night or two to get to know it better we can arrange that for you.

Heading outside of Helsinki you will encounter quiet country roads, thick forests and small traditional villages with their characteristic wooden houses. Highlights include Tuusulanjärvi Lake, traditionally an artist’s colony, and the town of Porvoo, one of Finland’s prettiest. The Viikki arboretum and bird sanctuary on the outskirts of Helsinki is also great for nature lovers.

You will stay in comfortable, good quality accommodation along your route. The first night in Helsinki will be at Hotel Helka or similar, then you will stay at small bed & breakfasts in Järvenpää, Porvoo, and Sipoo. Further details will be given after booking.
