Matrei in Osttirol (975 m altitude) is a small, family-friendly resort in the Hohe Tauern National Park, East Tyrol. The Kals-Matrei ski area offers around 40 km of slopes from 920 up to 2,600 m, with a vertical drop of 1,700 m. Also known as the Großglockner resort, it faces the mountain of the same name, the highest peak in Austria at 3,798 m. In fact the area is famous for its tall peaks, with 60 over 3,000 m, making the views from the slopes simply breathtaking.

The state of the art lift system (including a 6-seater chairlift with heated seats) ensures that you spend little to no time queuing and more on the well-groomed pistes, just over half of which are red, with a couple of black runs and some green and blue slopes ideal for children and beginners over in the neighbouring village of Kals. The entire ski area, which includes 3 valley runs, is covered by snow-making facilities.

For those who like to spend as much time in the mountain huts as they do on the slopes, there are 13 restaurants around the ski area, so you are never far from a refreshment stop.

Other activities include cross country skiing, snow shoeing, horse riding and horse drawn sleigh rides.

Après ski

While there are a few bars dotted around the resort, those looking to party should perhaps look elsewhere. There is a floodlit toboggan run around 7 km from Matrei; walk up to the top, stop for a snack at the hut there, and then go sledding down the illuminated slope.

Hotel Hinteregger***

This beautifully designed hotel is located in a quiet part of the resort, around 1 km from the ski area, with a ski bus stop right outside.

The bright and airy rooms in the new part of the hotel offer contemporary Alpine design using lots of natural materials. They come with balcony, satellite TV, free WiFi access, parquet flooring and bathroom with bath or shower and hairdryer.

The hotel has a sauna for the use of guests and massages are available on request (to be paid separately).

The restaurant offers traditional Tyrolean cuisine, with many fresh ingredients coming from the hotel's own farm so food miles are kept to a minimum. The dining room is light and elegant in keeping with the style of the rooms, and there is also a cosy farmer's parlour for those who like a traditional Austrian feel.

The stylish cellar bar adds another contemporary touch for pre or post-dinner drinks.
