Matrei in Osttirol (975 m altitude) is a small, family-friendly resort in the Hohe Tauern National Park, East Tyrol. The Kals-Matrei ski area offers around 40 km of slopes from 920 up to 2,600 m, with a vertical drop of 1,700 m. Also known as the Großglockner resort, it faces the mountain of the same name, the highest peak in Austria at 3,798 m. In fact the area is famous for its tall peaks, with 60 over 3,000 m, making the views from the slopes simply breathtaking.

The state of the art lift system (including a 6-seater chairlift with heated seats) ensures that you spend little to no time queuing and more on the well-groomed pistes, just over half of which are red, with a couple of black runs and some green and blue slopes ideal for children and beginners over in the neighbouring village of Kals. The entire ski area, which includes 3 valley runs, is covered by snow-making facilities.

For those who like to spend as much time in the mountain huts as they do on the slopes, there are 13 restaurants around the ski area, so you are never far from a refreshment stop.

Other activities include cross country skiing, snow shoeing, horse riding and horse drawn sleigh rides.

Après ski

While there are a few bars dotted around the resort, those looking to party should perhaps look elsewhere. There is a floodlit toboggan run around 7 km from Matrei; walk up to the top, stop for a snack at the hut there, and then go sledding down the illuminated slope.

Hotel Goldreid***

This family-run hotel is located in a beautiful panoramic position overlooking the valley. You can ski back close to the hotel (just under 200m) and there is a ski bus stop nearby to take you to the gondola station in under 5 minutes.
