Monte Baranci is part of the Drei Zinnen (or ‘Three Peaks’) ski area, a collection of resorts under one name in the German speaking South Tyrol area of Italy, close to the Austrian border. The distinctive three mountain peaks that give the area its name are located in the National Park of the same name, and are a UNESCO world heritage site.

The main two areas are Monte Baranci (San Candido/Innichen) which offers around 15km of slopes, and the larger area of Monte Elmo-Croda Rossa (near the village of Sesto/Sexten) which was once a collection of smaller areas, now all connected to offer 90km of slopes.

Monte Baranci offers 4 drag lifts and a chairlift. A small ski area great for beginners and lower intermediates who want to get their confidence up on quiet slopes, it is very family friendly.

Those wanting more of a challenge should hop on the short ski bus ride to the main area nearby which offers a larger variety of slopes for all abilities, including some steep runs near Croda Rossa.

Monte Baranci also offers a snow park, 2km toboggan run and night skiing twice a week.

For those wanting even more choice Kronplatz is just 30 mins away by train.

Après ski

San Candido is a pretty little town offering a few good shops and bars, though not known for lively après ski (in this respect its more Italian than Austrian) head out instead for a pre-dinner aperitivo at one of the trendy bars. At Christmas there is a wonderful festive feel thanks to the Christmas market.

Families can visit Italy’s only Reindeer herd near the Croda Rossa gondola station and even feed the animals at twice-weekly feeding sessions open to the public from 2pm. Afterwards they can head to the Acquafun water park and swimming pool complex, while the kids enjoy the slides, parents can relax in the sauna.

Park Hotel Sole Paradiso****

This charming family-run hotel dates back to 1882 and is nestled in a secluded woodland position just outside the centre of San Candido, which can be easily reached on foot in under 10 minutes.

The San Candido ski area Monte Baranci is five minutes’ walk from the hotel and there is the option to leave your skis at the rental shop close to the lift for just € 3 per day. You can reach the larger Sesto ski area in 5 minutes by ski bus, which stops directly in front of the hotel as well as near the rental shop.

The spacious rooms are furnished in a contemporary Alpine style and come complete with balcony, a small seating area, satellite TV, safe, minibar, and bathroom with bath or shower and hairdryer.

The spa offers a heated indoor pool (5 x 11m), Finnish sauna, bio sauna, steam room, kneipp foot bath and relaxation area, as well as a small gym area. Entry is included for guests, massages and treatments are available on request.

The hotel restaurant offers a very high standard of beautifully presented local dishes with a contemporary twist, accompanied by a carefully curated selection of local wines.

Parking is available on site free of charge, no reservation necessary.
