You will be based in the pretty, historic town of Tirano in Valtellina, northern Italy, very close to the Swiss border. Tirano has an abundance of interesting places to visit for lovers of history, food and wine. While it may not look impressive at first glance from the main road, head towards the historic centre and main piazza and wonder around the streets there, and you will not be able to deny the charm of the place.

The terraced vineyards on the mountainside surrounding the town produce some robust red wines from the nebbiolo grape, the most common are Inferno, Sassella and Grumello, and the highly regarded Sforzato.

Bormio is a great resort for intermediate skiers, who can ski nonstop from 3012m down to the town at 1225m, a real leg burner but well worth it; the final run into the town is the famous Stelvio piste. Those who don’t fancy this steep, challenging piste can ski down along a more forgiving blue run. The resort offers 50km of pistes, including 5 blue runs, 6 red runs and 2 black runs, served by 15 lifts - queues are rare. There is also a small snowpark and a large freeride area.

The resort is also famous for its thermal waters, and after skiing you can head to the Bagni Vecchi spa where you can soak your sore muscles and enjoy the fantastic views over the town from the outdoor pool, and take a dip in the old Roman baths that are still in use.

Aprica offers 50km of slopes (9 blue, 8 red, 3 black) from 1160-2310m. Most are nice and wide, ideal for cruising and getting some good turns in, though nothing especially challenging.

Diavolezza is a small resort over the Swiss border, located around 20km from St. Moritz; it offers a more low key alternative to its snazzy neighbour, with 32km of red and black runs between 2,000 and 3,000m.

The resort can be reached via the Bernina Express railway, a beautiful journey through the Alps that was declared a UNESCO world heritage site in 2008. This unique single-track railway climbs to a maximum height of 2,253m – the highest point reached by a train in Europe - offering spectacular views of mountain lakes and glaciers along the way.

Other possible resorts include, St. Moritz (1 hour by car or 2 1/2 by the Bernina Express), Santa Caterina Valfurva (50 mins by car), Livigno (90 mins by car), Ponte di Legno/Tonale (70 mins by car) and Valmalenco (50 mins by car).

Ostello del Castello

This beautifully renovated old farmhouse (re)opened its doors in 2015 and offers 8 bedrooms, a breakfast room, a cosy bar area with fireplace and a ski/bike deposit. Run by the Gusmeroli family you can expect a warm welcome and excellent hospitality.

It is located close to the old town centre of Tirano and 1km from the mainline train station and the Bernina Express station.

The rooms each have their own unique character and range from double to quad rooms, and even a large family suite that sleeps up to 6 people. They each come with TV, private bathroom with shower and hairdryer, free WiFi access and some have balconies.

There is public parking nearby that costs around € 3 per day.
