Umbria is the only region in Italy with no coastline or international border. Instead it offers beautiful rolling hills, ancient hilltop towns and excellent cuisine and wines; all in all much like Tuscany but without the crowds.

The region's capital is Perugia, which like most Italian cities boasts a beautiful historic centre, as well as a lively cultural scene and nightlife thanks to the big university there. There is a packed calendar of music, art and food festivals throughout the year.

The nearest small town to the Castello di Baccaresca is Gubbio, a pretty medieval village 20 minutes drive away. If you can tear yourself away from the estate you could spend an hour or two there, or head into livelier Perugia.

Castello di Baccaresca

This romantic hotel is nestled in a 250-hectare estate in the heart of the Umbrian countryside. The castle dates back to the 12th century, when it enjoyed great strategic and military importance. Now thanks to careful restoration work you can still admire the original frescoes and fireplaces.

The 19 rooms and suites come complete with air conditioning, safe, minibar, private bathroom, hairdryer, TV and free WiFi.
The hotel spa offers a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi; massages and beauty treatments are also available.

A generous hot and cold buffet breakfast is provided in the morning and there is an excellent a la carte restaurant on site offering strictly locally sourced food, from the meat from nearby farms, to the vegetables from the hotel’s own garden.
Gluten-free and vegan diets are also catered for.

On site parking is available free of charge.
