Vicenza is the Veneto region's best kept secret. Often overlooked in favour of Venice and Verona, it is nonetheless well worth a visit, with its impressive Palladian architecture earning the city UNESCO World Heritage status.

Palladio was a self-taught architect in the Renaissance period, who designed may of the grand buildings in and around the city and gave it its distinctive style which has been well-preserved through the centuries.

Highlights include the Teatro Olimpico in the city centre and La Rotonda, just outside (around 10 minutes' drive from the hotel).

Marostica, is around 45 minutes' drive from the Villa Michelangelo, and is most famous for the giant chess board in the main square, which hosts a live human chess game once every two years in September (the next is 11-13 September 2020, just a few days before the concert) where participants dress in medieval costume and play out a game of chess in front of over 3,500 spectators.

There are two castles, one in the main square, and one overlooking the town, which you can walk up to and enjoy the views over the Veneto plains below.
