Essential Information

Let’s Go to Bormio

Italy Bormio (1225m) is a beautiful spa town and mountain resort located in the Alta Valtellina just north east of Lake Como and close to the Swiss border. While it is best known as a ski resort and part of the ski world cup circuit, the town has become a very popular summer destination for cyclists, from road bikers keen to take on the legendary Stelvio, Gavia and Mortirolo mountain passes often featured in the Giro d’Italia, to mountain bikers who have a wealth of trails to choose from as well as a downhill park. Those looking for gentler more forgiving routes can enjoy the slowly expanding network of cycle paths or alternatively hire a pedal assisted e-bike to take some of the strain out of exploring the mountainside on two wheels! There are three thermal spa centres here – the historic Bagni Vecchi which date back to Ancient Roman times, the Bagni Nuovi 5-star luxury resort and lastly Bormio Terme with its indoor and outdoor swimming pools, waterslide for kids and ‘thermarium’ spa for adults. Hiking opportunities are numerous; highlights include the Forni glacier area above the nearby town of Santa Caterina Valfurva, Lake Cancano and Monte Scala, the Val Viola and the Val Zebru’. The trails are well signposted and can easily be explored independently, though the Stelvio National Park offers twice weekly guided excursions throughout July and August. Those looking for more of a challenge can strap on their crampons and go mountaineering with the local Alpine Guides. Other possible activities include summer skiing on the Stelvio glacier (open May – early November), husky dog sledding on grass in nearby Arnoga, indoor ice skating, a panoramic nine-hole golf course and the famous Bernina Express railway from Tirano to St. Moritz. The historic town centre is a pleasure to explore, with its medieval churches, upmarket shops, café bars and restaurants. Those who are interested in history and the local area can take a guided tour of the town and/or visit the fascinating civic museum. llll
