This was a tricky one. Trying to choose our top 3 activity breaks for couples.
We have a wealth of active holidays to choose from, from walking tours to self-guided cycling trips and more adrenaline-fuelled adventure holidays including activities like white-water rafting and canyoning. So how do you narrow it down to your favourite 3? What are the criteria that make the best adventure holidays for couples?
Romantic setting?
Experiencing something new together?
Quality time together?
After much discussion we have picked 3 breaks that make a fantastic getaway with your other half, from a luxury spa hotel in Madeira to an adventure in the Cinque Terre and a self-guided cycling tour of Istria.
Luxury in Madeira

Enjoy a 4-night break on the Atlantic island of Madeira, explore the capital Funchal by tuk tuk, take two guided hikes along the Levadas – the islands famous irrigation system that snakes through picturesque woodland around the island, and pamper yourself with two partial massages in the hotel spa.
The right balance of exploring and relaxing and an ideal short break for couples.
Adventure in the Cinque Terre
Manarola, Cinque Terre
If you’re looking for a bit more action, then this 4-night multi-activity package in Italy’s beautiful Cinque Terre could be the one for you. With a kayaking excursion, rock climbing and an easy mountain biking excursion along coastal paths and through vineyards, the (guided) activities are all suitable for beginners, though there are more challenging versions available on request.
Stay in a self-catering one-apartment in either Manarola or Riomaggiore, two-bedroom apartments are also available if you are travelling with friends.
Combine the romantic setting with half-day outdoor activities and you have the perfect getaway for active couples
Pedalling in Istria
Rovinj, Istria
Do you and your other half love nothing more than exploring the countryside on two wheels? Then this self-guided 7-night tour of Istria is for you. With a detailed itinerary and luggage transfers included, you can enjoy exploring the Croatian peninsula, with its pretty seaside towns, country villages and excellent cuisine.
You’ll average around 60km per day so a certain level of fitness is necessary, though e-bikes are also available for hire for those looking for a less strenuous trip.
Set off on a self-guided adventure and explore this beautiful part of the world together
