Start in the Tyrolean capital Innsbruck with its picturesque old town giving way to a spectacular Alpine backdrop. Head along the river Inn cycle path and into the Ziller valley where the road gets hillier (though you can cross the Gerlos pass by bus transfer if you can’t face it) and enjoy views of Europe’s largest waterfall in Krimml.
Take the Tauern cycle path through the Hohe Tauern National Park to beautiful Zell-am-See and views of the imposing Kitzsteinhorn mountain.
From there follow the river Saalach as it flows through Germany and back into Austria until you reach Sound of Music country, Salzburg.
This elegant city holds many surprises, beyond its perfectly preserved streets, dramatic hilltop fortress and beautiful skyline it has a lively cultural and culinary scene that combines the contemporary with the classical for a perfect end to an Austrian adventure.
Innsbruck to Salzburg self-guided cycling holiday
Enjoy some fantastic mountain scenery on this relatively easy 6-night cycling holiday. This quintessentially Austrian tour takes you from one famous city to another via Alpine meadows and lakes. Though you will stop off in famous ski resorts like Zillertal and Zell-am-See, the route is not too demanding with a few hilly sections. Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Innsbruck and check-in.
Tour briefing and bike collection.
Overnight in Innsbruck
Day 2: Innsbruck - Strass in Zillertal (approx. 50 km)
Head in the direction of Wattens and enjoy the views of the Karwendel mountains. You will pass through the town of Hall with its historic Mint tower, home to the famous Swarovski Crystal Worlds, then pedal along the Inn cycle path past Schwaz, (stopping off at the silver mine should you wish) until you reach the small village of Strass.
Overnight in Zillertal
Day 3: Strass in Zillertal - Krimml (approx. 25-45 km transfer)
Set out along the flat Zillertal bike path until you get to Zell, or even a bit further along to Mayrhofen, enjoying amazing mountain views of the Zillertal main ridge. Take a bus in the early afternoon over the Gerlospass to Krimml. You will catch a glimpse of its impressive waterfall en route, but you will have time to visit up close when you arrive.

Day 4: Krimml - Kaprun/Zell am See (approx. 60 km)
Today’s route runs through the Hohe Tauern national park and Upper Pinzgau, with more spectacular mountain views. Cycling through lush green meadows and small villages, you will enjoy some truly magical scenery.
Overnight in Zell am See
Day 5: Kaprun/Zell am See - Lofer (approx. 50 km)
Take a refreshing swim in Lake Zell or explore the area by bike before heading out. Ride through Maria Alm with its famous pilgrimage church before reaching Saalfelden, an ideal lunch stop. Further highlights on your way to Lofer include the Seisenbergklamm gorge and the Lamprechtshöhle caves near Weißbach.
Overnight in Lofer
Day 6: Lofer - Salzburg (approx. 50 km)
On your final day cycle through the peaceful Saalach valley which takes you into Germany and back into Austria via the Bavarian town of Bad Reichenhall. From here it is not far until you reach Salzburg. Here you should have enough time for a stroll around the old town and perhaps even visit Mozart’s birthplace.
